Organizing Committee Letter

To: Our Colleagues, the California Virtual Academies Governing Boards, CAVA Administration and our school communities

We are educators at California Virtual Academies (CAVA) who teach students from all over California in a wide variety of grade levels and academic subjects. Some of us are relatively new to teaching in an online educational environment while others have been with CAVA for many years. All of us are committed to providing the best possible education to our students and upholding the important principles that brought us to the profession.

In recent years, we have become increasingly concerned that some decisions made by CAVA negatively impact our students and our profession. Frequent policy changes, shifting class rosters, changes in responsibilities and increased workload make it harder to provide the education our students deserve. Though our dedicated colleagues are committed educators who work long hours and struggle to serve their students, it feels like it is never enough.

After talking with hundreds of fellow CAVA educators from across the state, we have decided that it is time for a change. Specifically, we believe educators who work at CAVA ought to have a stronger voice in decisions that impact our school, our students and our working conditions. That is why we have decided to organize a union here at CAVA with the California Teachers Association.

We take this decision very seriously. By forming a union at CAVA we will be taking responsibility for making the changes we know are necessary at our school. We know that administration may prefer that we not unionize, however it is our legally protected right. As such, we ask that they respect our decision.

Finally, we are very excited to announce that a majority of CAVA educators have already signed our union support petition. In the near future, we look forward to getting input from all of our colleagues about how to make CAVA the best possible online school. In the meantime, if you have any questions, feel free to contact one of us.

Sincerely,

The CAVA Union Organizing Committee
