Teacher Spotlight

One of the challenges of working at a virtual school is that it is harder to get to know each other since we work from our homes. In an effort to build community among our CAVA teachers, we will periodically spotlight one of our CAVA colleagues in our “Teacher Spotlight” section.

1. What grade do you teach and how long have you been with CAVA?

“I teach HS at CAVA and have been doing so for the past 8+ years. I teach Fine Art, Community Day, AP Art History and anything in the Social Sciences.”

2. What is your background in education? (ex. How long have you been a teacher or how you got into the profession)

“I have been teaching for 13 years officially, but much longer than that as I resisted teaching for a long time. I always knew I would end up here, I just wanted to play hard to get!

Some History: I was a scary smart kid. I read almost before I could walk. I was skipped from kindergarten to 3rd grade and got reprimanded for doing a book report on East of Eden before I was 10. All I ever wanted to do was read, study and learn everything!!! The education system knocked that joy right out of me. I grew to HATE school. The regimentation. The inability to adapt the status quo to accommodate anyone who was different or creative or a little left of center. I barely graduated from HS. When I had my own kids way too young I saw that system hadn’t changed and the only way to change it wasn’t by standing outside the fence screaming at those inside. I had to do it from the side of the “enemy”. I essayed myself into UCLA, completed 4 years of work in 2 (while working full time and raising 4 kids and commuting from Orange County) I graduated cum laude. I then hit up UCI for my credential and immediately turned to alternative education teaching highly at risk youth in Sylmar.”

3. What is your favorite part about your job?

“Reaching these kids meant so much more to me than anything I have ever done.”

4. What are some of your hobbies and interests?

“I am a voracious reader and I read everything I can get my hands on. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt is a current heartbreaking favorite. I love all movies, especially classics. Casablanca, Roman Holiday, Ben-Hur. Modern sci fi. Raiders of the Lost Ark. Foreign films. Westerns. Comedies. Musicals. I love them all.

I also like Medieval weaponry (I fight with broadswords, quarterstaffs and sabers), costume design and construction, classic cars (I have a 57 Nash Metropolitan), organic gardening, cooking, Irish music, reading, quilting and interior design.”

5. What is the most beautiful place you’ve ever seen?

“I love sitting at the top of Montmarte at Sacre Coeur at the millennium watching the fireworks over Paris. The Piazzo San Marco in Venice at sunset. I get chills every time I stand in front of a painting or a sculpture that I have only ever seen in books.”

6. What is the ultimate dream vacation?

“My dream vacation would be to go from museum to museum to castle to library to museum all over the world.”

7.  What’s one thing you are most proud of?

“My proudest moments have been seeing students “get it”. Making them laugh, making them think, making them know that I believe in them and that knowing stuff really is COOL!”
